About Theragun: Two Doctors, One Percussion Idea

Theragun did not start as a consumer product. It started as a tool for treating athletes, co-founded in 2015 by physiotherapist Dr. Leigh Perreault and exercise physiologist Dr. John Porcari. The company behind it, Therabody, has kept that clinical frame since.

From treatment table to locker room

Dr. Porcari had spent years studying how people recover, and Dr. Perreault had spent years treating the sore ones. The first Theragun was built for the second use case: a percussion device that a physio could aim at a specific muscle, hard, and measure the effect. The name did the rest of the marketing: it is what it does.

Therabody, the Toronto company founded in 2014, acquired Theragun in 2020 and folded it into a wider recovery range: JetBoots compression, RecoveryTherm heat and cold, TheraFace skincare. The Therabody Theragun line kept its spec-sheet character, and the guns ended up where athlete gear ends up: pro locker rooms from the UFC to the Premier League, with Kendall Jenner and Josh Allen running public routines on them.

The science still does the heavy lifting. Porcari’s own 2018 study found percussion therapy matched foam rolling for reducing delayed muscle soreness, and an Open University systematic review found massage gun use can improve muscle strength, explosive strength and flexibility while reducing pain experiences. That is why the range reads like a lab notebook: numbers on the box, claims you can check.

Who makes Theragun

Therabody, Inc. The Theragun percussion line sits alongside the Hypervolt vibration line, JetBoots leg compression, RecoveryTherm hot and cold wearables and the TheraFace skincare devices. You can buy the guns at the official store, at Best Buy, or in a Therabody store near you.

The FSA and HSA angle matters for US buyers: qualifying Theragun products carry an FSA/HSA badge, which is why the brand reads a bit more like a medical device catalog than a gadget store.

FAQ

Company questions, answered

Does Theragun have an app?

Yes. The Therabody app, free on iOS and Android, carries a library of guided routines for warm-up, recovery and specific body areas, and it tracks your sessions. The app is where the “guided” models earn their keep.

Is Theragun Bluetooth compatible?

The current Plus line of models (Mini Plus, Prime Plus, Pro Plus) pairs with the Therabody app over Bluetooth for guided routines and session tracking. The simpler models, like the Mini and the Relief, run standalone. Check the product page for the exact pairing on the model you are eyeing.

How do you charge a Theragun?

A USB-C cable into any USB power source. A full charge takes a couple of hours, and the charge stand (sold separately) is the tidy way to live with it once the gun is a daily object.

How long does a Theragun battery last?

120 to 150 minutes on a charge, depending on the model and the speed you run. Battery life is longest at the lowest speed, so a gentle full-body pass goes further than a maximum-intensity session on the quads. Most owners charge once a week or less.

How loud is a Theragun?

Quieter than the first generation, which sounded like a lawnmower indoors. The Relief and the Mini are the quietest of the current line. At full intensity the larger models are noticeable in a quiet room, comparable to a hair dryer at arm’s length, not in your face. In a house with a dog, expect the dog to know about it.

Is Theragun safe to use?

Yes, on healthy muscle, within the rules: 15 to 60 seconds per area, never on bone, joints, the front or sides of the neck, the face, or over implants, clots, varicose veins or fresh injuries. If you are pregnant or under treatment for a condition, clear it with a clinician first. The precautions list on each product page is the same, condensed.

Is Theragun FSA eligible?

Qualifying Theragun products are FSA and HSA eligible in the US, and they carry an FSA/HSA badge where that applies. Whether a specific model qualifies at a given store is worth confirming at checkout, since the eligible list can shift.
