Most Powerful Flagship
The flagship, and the most expensive Theragun. Heat, LED light therapy and vibration stacked on top of the percussion, in a 1.65 kg tool.
Check PriceA Theragun works on muscle, not joints. Here is where people use theirs most.
Calves, quads and the IT band. Ten minutes after a long run is when runners notice the difference in the next one.
Neck, shoulders and upper back. Eight hours at a screen is a deep-tissue session nobody scheduled, and a Theragun undoes a lot of it.
Glutes, lats, hamstrings. Warm up tight muscles before a session, knock down DOMS after, and keep training through the week.
The Mini fits in a carry-on pocket and runs on a hotel outlet. It is the Theragun for flights, gyms and gym bags that are always too full.

Theragun Pro Plus Flagship - Most Powerful The flagship: heat, LED and vibration Check Price A Theragun is a percussion massager. A motor drives a massage head into your muscle at up to 3,200 hits per minute, pushing blood into the tissue and interrupting the pain-signal loop. That is the whole trick, and it is why the lineup reads like a lab spec sheet rather than a spa brochure.
The research backs the basics. In a 2018 study from the University of Wisconsin, La Crosse, percussion therapy matched foam rolling for reducing delayed muscle soreness, without the 15 minutes of rolling around the floor. And an Open University systematic review, cited by Therabody, found that massage gun use can improve muscle strength, explosive strength and flexibility while reducing experiences of pain.
Timing matters as much as power. Before a workout, two to three light passes on the muscle group you are about to use gets blood moving. After, slow the speed down and work each area for 15 to 60 seconds. A Theragun for sore muscles is less about brute force and more about reading the tension and backing off a notch.
Every Theragun swaps heads in seconds, and every head targets a different job: tight knots, long muscle groups, trigger points. This is where first-time buyers lose the most money by guessing.
Read the attachments guideTheragun started in 2015, co-founded by physiotherapist Dr. Leigh Perreault and exercise physiologist Dr. John Porcari. The first device was built to treat athletes, not sell them gadgets. When Toronto’s Therabody acquired the brand in 2020, the focus stayed the same: percussion therapy with measurable effects.
Today the range runs from the hand-sized Mini to the Pro Plus, which adds heat, LED and vibration to the percussion. Theraguns sit in pro locker rooms from the UFC to the Premier League, and Kendall Jenner and Josh Allen run their recovery routines on them. Anyone can now run the same recovery routine at home.
My gym’s gun rattled like a blender, so I was skeptical. The Prime is quieter than I expected and the 120 minute battery means I charge it maybe once a month. My deadlifts are not the test, but my lower back stopped complaining.
Maya R. Denver Bought it for my neck after eight hours at a desk. The standard head sounds aggressive until it touches your shoulder, then it just works. It goes in my laptop bag twice a week and has not scratched a single corner.
Tom B. Manchester I run marathons, so I wanted the biggest hammer. The heat function is the difference: two minutes of warm percussion before I start hitting my quads, and the next morning is not a negotiation.
Aisha K. Austin A Theragun is a percussion massager made by Therabody. A battery-powered motor drives a swappable massage head into muscle tissue at high speed, up to 3,200 percussions per minute. It is the category leader in massage guns, used by athletes and physiotherapists as well as office workers with desk-built shoulders.
It delivers rapid, deep pulses into muscle. The pulses push blood into the area, which flushes out the metabolites that make muscle feel tight, and they interrupt the pain signals that keep the muscle braced. The practical result: less soreness, better warm-up and a back that stops creaking by the third hour of sitting.
The motor reciprocates the head along the muscle, so each pulse is a small, controlled impact rather than a vibration that sits on the surface. Because the head is shaped to the muscle group, pressure concentrates where you aim it. Speed is adjustable on every model, from a slow pass you can read through to full intensity.
Yes, on healthy muscle. A 2018 study from the University of Wisconsin, La Crosse found percussion therapy reduced delayed muscle soreness as well as foam rolling, and an Open University systematic review found massage gun use can improve strength, flexibility and pain experiences. A Theragun is not there to fix a torn muscle or replace sleep, and it should never work on bone or joints. Aim at muscle, and the results hold up.
It depends on how often you will actually use it. If you train three or more times a week, sit at a desk all day, or simply pay for massages regularly, the price of a Theragun pays for itself in a few months. If you would use it twice a month, a gym’s gun or a lighter percussion tool covers it, and the Mini is the gentlest entry point.
First Theragun or travel use: the Mini. Daily use on bigger muscle groups: the Prime. You want heat to warm muscle before you work it: the Prime Plus or Pro Plus. Gentle pressure and a smaller budget: the Relief. Full power with heat, LED and vibration and no budget ceiling: the Pro Plus. The full comparison is on our models page.
Fifteen to 60 seconds per muscle group, and a full session of 10 to 15 minutes tops. Move the head slowly along the muscle rather than holding it on one spot, and drop a speed setting if the area starts feeling bruised. More time does not mean more relief, past that window it is just noise.
Yes, daily 10 to 15 minute sessions are fine for healthy muscle. Skip anything that is acutely injured, bruised or swollen, and give fresh soreness a day or two before heavy percussion. If a spot hurts the same way week after week, that is a clinician conversation, not a stronger setting.
Never on bones, joints, the spine itself, the front or sides of the neck, the face, varicose veins, or over implants or surgery scars. Avoid the lower back in pregnancy unless a clinician clears it. The rule of thumb: if you can feel bone under the head, back off.
It can. The soreness-reduction effect from the 2018 Wisconsin, La Crosse study is the headline, and the blood-flow effect is why people use Theragun after workouts to keep the next session easy. It is a recovery tool, not a replacement for sleep or protein. Used before or after a workout, it shortens the window where you feel like a car accident.
A Theragun is a wellness device, not a medical one. If you have an injury, clot, implant or are pregnant, check with a clinician before use.
